Closeout Pride Premiere with a QTBIPOC-only poetry slam!

Join us for Under the Table’s takeover at the Davie Lounge on Sunday, July 30. Everyone is welcome to attend and witness the work of QTBIPOC poets. This event is a chance for disabled queers to be in a covid-conscious space this summer! Under the Table is a poetry collective centering disabled and/or queer poets. Masks are required for this event while not eating or drinking (N95 masks are recommended as they offer the best protection) and will be provided for anyone who does not bring one. There will be a first come first serve, designated seating area for folks who would like to take off their masks while sitting down, masks will still be required while walking around the venue.

Featuring Adonis Critter King and hosted by fanny kearse, sign-ups for this poetry slam are only open to Queer, Trans, Black, Indigenous and People of Colour. Share your words with an audience of your people and win prizes up to $250! Doors at 5:30 and show at 6 PM.

Sign-ups for the slam are required prior to the event and will remain open until Friday July 21. There will be a draw on the day of the event to fill the 15 slots open for the slam. Trans, Black, Indigenous, people of colour will be prioritized in the selection.


Accessibility Information

Masks Required

This event is masks required. There will be masks available upon entry. We recommend all guests wear KN95 Masks.

Mask Optional Section

This event is masks required to center folks who are covid conscious. There will be a small Masks Optional seating area. This area will be first come first serve, and masks will still be required while walking around the venue.

Low Sensory Tent

The Low Sensory Tent is located at Jim Deva Plaza, containing ice packs, stim toys, a weighted blanket, ear plugs, and colouring sheets.

Sensory Level

This event is a poetry slam with medium to high noise levels. The venue will be outdoors with the weather forecast indicating a cloudy day at 26 degrees. This event is sober, but the venue will have a bar with non-alcoholic drinks. If you find yourself overstimulated, please make use of our Low Sensory Tent available at Jim Deva Plaza.

Sensory Aids

There is a Low Sensory Tent located at Jim Deva Plaza for folks who might feel overstimulated. Stim toys and earplugs are available at the check-in table.

Mobility

The outdoor venue is located on a closed section of Bute. The entire site is concrete pavement. The street curbs and sidewalk will be used to host the bar. There will be a flat paved surface and there will be an aisle that is 4 feet wide aisle running down the site. 

Seating

There will be primarily folding chairs available for guests. There will be a limited amount of rolling armchairs and seat cushions available for those who need them.

Shade and Shelter

The site will have umbrellas at most tables offering shade. Other seating will be shaded by trees.

Washroom

There are three gender-neutral porta-potties onsite. There is one accessible porta-potty, the unit door width is 31.7" (830mm) and the seat height is 19" (521mm). There will be no automatic buttons for the door. If you need assistance please ask a volunteer.

ASL Interpreters

There will be ASL interpreters for the duration of the event. Participating poets must sign-up prior to the event to provide their poems for ASL interpretation.

Audio Description

There will be no audio description provided at this event. The event will primarily involve participants speaking on stage.

First Aid

There will be staff members trained in First Aid. All Vancouver Pride Society staff and Under the Table organizers will have Naloxone training prior to the event. Please approach a VPS staff member if you are in need of first aid.

Security

The security company, Genesis will be onsite for the entire duration of the event. If you are experiencing security issues, please contact a VPS staff member onsite.

Public Transport

The event will not obstruct Translink bus stops. Here are some routes to the Bubly Davie St Lounge:

  • Public transport: The closest bus is the #6 route (stopping Davie St at Bute)

  • 18 minute walk from the Burrard Street skytrain station

  • The fastest route from the Burrard street skytrain station is taking the 002 Bus to Burrard and Davie, and walking 6 minutes down Davie Street, or then catching the 006 bus from Davie/ Thurlow.

Parking & Street Closures

  • There is limited street parking along Davie Street ranging from $6.00 to $30. See parkopedia for parking options.

  • Bute Street will be closed to traffic from Davie St to the See-Em-Ia laneway from July 25th to August 9th. Sidewalks will remain open and will not be blocked by event infrastructure.

  •  Underground paid parking is available at 1237 Davie St but it does not offer accessible parking stalls or elevator access

Service animals are welcome at the event

Scent Reduction

Scent Reduction Policy in effect. Please avoid wearing perfume and strong scents.

Payment Options

Bar will accept cash, debit and credit via Square.

Wayfinding

Wayfinding signage will be displayed throughout the site. Braille menus are available at the bar.
